Mismatched gold earrings featuring two carved Perisan gemstones, circa 200 - 550 AD.

A completely unique pair of earrings uniting ancient artistry with contemporary design. Each features a Sasanian intaglio, suspended like a droplet from a handmade 18ct gold form.

One stone, a carnelian, depicts an eagle grasping a hare in its talons.  The second gem shows a serpent and a cat in confrontation: the cat rendered with arched spine, raised hackles, and, most unusually, a distinctly humanised expression - eyes alert, mouth curved in what might be read as a wry smile.

Both carvings are miniature masterworks. The narratives and identities portrayed are subtly conveyed - both eagle and serpent are rendered with coarse, aggressive strokes.  The cat and hare, carved more sensitively, may suggest feminine agency.  These gems likely served as personal symbols or narrative devices - intimate expressions of identity, belief and storytelling jewellery in its finest form.
