Elephant seal stone, circa 4000 - 3000 BC, set in an 18-carat gold and silk necklace.

Ebu is a statement necklace featuring an exquisite ancient sealstone. The personal seal,  drilled at the back and originally worn on a cord, originates from Anatolia / Mesopotamia over 5,000 years ago.

There is great variability in the quality of carvings from this period.  Though many are simple line drawings, this unique example features a reversed intaglio.  When imprinted in clay or wax it creates a graceful image of an elephant walking in tall grass.  The legs, drawn high into the torso, suggest a steady pendular motion.

Though elephants were not native to ancient Mesopotamia, wonderful sculptures of them dating from 3,000 BC have been found at Jemdet Nasr.  This beautiful seal stone is presented in a handmade 18-carat gold pendant and grass-green silk kumihimo necklace.
