Hacksilver formed part of the bullion economy of the Viking Age, when fragments of silver were traded by weight. It is often found in hoards alongside coinage and other portable wealth. This evocative piece retains a faint gold lustre, with a woven mane and triangular scale ornament indicating that it once formed part of an iconic dragon arm-ring.
